San Francisco Angels

 Wood Bat Baseball Team

Recap of prior 2003 games- May 28 & 29

Thursday evening, May 29- San Francisco State University, Maloney Field against SF Giants. Won 5-4. The "beginner team" designation for the SF Giants was inappropriate for this game, held in the foggy twilight at the sunken diamond. Giants starter Justin Mcfawn went the distance, losing in the bottom of the 9th on an error. Giants first baseman Chris Genung hit two ropes, including a bases-clearing triple. The Angels had early opportunities to pull away but couldn't get the clutch hits. Angels centerfielder Tom Shannon (Fresno State-bound) gunned down the amazing speedy runner Tony "Donkey" Williams at the plate in the top of the 9th inning to prevent the Giants from taking the lead. Angels catcher Dave Robinson (Hayward State) took the hard slide, held on to the ball and pinned it on the tail of Donkey. Robinson then led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and soon scored on Wes Bentley's (SF State) bunt and Giants' miscues.   Photo shows the somewhat great Giants star Tony Williams batting against Angels winning pitcher Matt Light.

Not So Hee-Haw!

The above description of Thursday's game is a revised version agreed to by the San Francisco Angels Wood Bat Baseball Team's Committee for Ethics and Censorship after receiving nonstop complaints from Mr. Williams of the Giants baseball team.  The vote was 5-4 in favor of trying to be somewhat nicer to Mr. Williams.

Wednesday evening, May 28- College of San Mateo against host San Mateo Bulldogs. Won 7-4.

Battle #1

Angels Rally to Overcome San Mateo Bulldogs

Wednesday, May 28- The San Francisco Angels traded leads with the San Mateo Bulldogs, and then pulled away with a four-run 8th inning in their 7-4 victory at College of San Mateo (CSM). Rich Gamble (City College SF, transferring to U of Hawaii at Hilo) earned the win, in relief of Sam Sinkavich (Cornell) and Marc Caviglia (also transferring to U of Hawaii at Hilo). Clutch hits came off the bats of DH Tom Shannon (U of Miami), 3rd baseman Wes Bentley (SF State), and leftfielder Keian Davis (Sonoma State). Outstanding defensive plays included one by 1st baseman Mike Mukuno (ex-SF State) on a foul ball in the corner, and another by Colin Stewart (ex-pro Atlanta Braves) on a strong throw from centerfield to nail a runner at third base. The Bulldogs starter Derrick Landavazo (Chabot College) struck out seven of the ten Angel hitters he faced but then was rotated out and replaced by less successful pitchers.

Below: The scoreboard shows a tight game in the 6th, but the scorebook shows Bentley's key hit in the 8th. Davis followed with a double.
