10-2 Bashing & 12-3 Whooping Angels Prey on Eagles
DH Mike Ryan greets baseball. In the 6th inning, Bertland Watson waits for the second time with the bases loaded, while the Eagles complete yet another fervent discussion about stopping the carnage.
Wednesday, May 21- Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill: In the Rural League season opener, the Angels scored three runs in the 4th inning and six in the 6th on their way to a 10-2 win over the Oakland Eagles. Starter Lance Stevens (SF State) won his 11th straight game for the Angels (he was 10-0 last summer). Stevens allowed just two hits in six innings. He survived four infield errors with the help of excellent outfield defense, perfect control, and some great breaking pitches. Ben Smith (SF State) closed for the Angels. The game was ended by darkness after 8 innings. With the addition of the lefty-hitting rightfielder, Chris Scrogings (SF State), the Angels offensive force has reached critical mass. And there's more to come. But the division rival Eagles split their four games with the Angels last year, and so were expected to be ready for battle again Thursday. Above: Angel starter Lance Stevens (SF State) in full stride. Stevens discusses child-rearing techniques with manager Roland Nazar, the father of four and a proud surfer. Below: On Diablo Valley College's right field fence is the jersey number of the late Justin Pienta, who played three summers with the Angels. Dano Kingman (ex-SF State) stands satisfied at second with a double.
Below: Before the game, sure it was difficult, but after the game, DVC decided to kick the players on both teams in the groin with a $35 special hidden parking charge. No signs were posted and the $1 fee slot box was way off to the side, next to the tennis courts. Fuck the DVC parking scam! Players turn in your ticket to the Bureaucracy Liaison Assistant Mr. Kingman and sign the protest letter that he will be mailing this week.
Crocker-Amazon field sure looks beautiful- if you're not standing out there, freezing your ass. Thursday, May 22- Crocker-Amazon #1, San Francisco: The Eagles took an early lead for the second straight day, but couldn't sustain rallies, while the Angels flew over them with an 12-3 win. The Eagles had impressive flame-throwers who couldn't hit their spots, and the patient Angels drew 9 walks to go along with 11 hits. Catcher Brad Shannon (Sonoma State) led the attack with a 3-run homer, a double, and five rbis. Chris Scrogings (SF State) went 3-for-4, dropping his batting average below .800. Leadoff hitter Keian Davis (Sonoma State) walked four times.
Robert Salini (Sonoma State) started for the Angels, had a troubled early start, and then settled in for the victory. Relievers Matt Flaherty (SF State) and John Herbert (ex-pro San Diego Padres) finished up the combined 3-hit, 2-walk performance.
With the return of Brad Shannon, the Angels lineup has begun taking on a frightening swagger, with good hitters striving to meet the rapidly-rising standards of offensive performance. "It'll be a great season, if we can keep these guys together the whole summer," said Manager Roland Nazar.
Below: Robert Salini warms up. Brad Shannon (#46) congratulated on homerun. Chris Scrogings fouls off a high fastball. Bertland Watson watches the pitch come in.
