...[ExLax jokes, etc- common for Ostler at that time- webmaster]...

The Giants are fading, the A's are sunk, and you know what that means: We need to shift our collective baseball rooting efforts to the beloved San Francisco Angels.

Here, then, installment No. 1 of Angels Update (collect the entire series):

The semi-pro Angels are battling for a playoff spot in the Sacramento Rural League. Last Saturday, our boys defeated the Humboldt Crabs 16-4 behind the two- homer heroics of 35-year-old Nicaraguan third-baseman Willie (The Thrillie) Gomez.

Last year at Humboldt, the Crab-hired umpire called Gomez out on strikes five (!) times (Hey ump, is that a strike zone or a time zone?), after which Willie vowed to manager Roland Nazar, ``Roland, I'm gonna make those guys pay.''

``He did,'' Nazar says, ``and it was a beautiful thing.''

Can the Angels snag a SRL playoff spot? Next time they're on the road and must choose between buying beer and renting a hotel room, will the Angels again make the right choice? Stay tuned.

Rare event, isolated situation, this won't happen again? Bull puckey! The Angels also beat up the homely Crabs 11-0 on July 4, 2000. Let us bring real umpires to the Arcata ballfield and the Crabs' vaulted winning percentage record would start becoming more real.  But then what would those Humboldt cousins have left- some trees, ephedrine products, plant harvesting? Still, we have no business feeding their illusions, let's stomp on them again this year.     -webmaster
